About this book

On the last afternoon of the year, Sylvia and Molly prepare a welcoming tea in their Paris rooms, still grieving for their grandmother. Their aunt returns distressed after losing the old watch and locket that carry precious family memories. This opening story gives Mrs. Molesworth's collection its intimate scale: ordinary possessions and small household incidents matter because of the feelings attached to them.

Across eight stories, A Christmas Posy brings together family affection, children's conduct and imaginative play. In the excerpt from Basil's Violin, a boy who wants to abandon his lessons discovers his teacher in distress, and irritation gives way to sympathy. Conversations reveal the children's pride, impatience and care for others, often within a few exchanges. Readers interested in stories about growing consideration will find close attention to how children learn to notice another person's troubles.
