About this book

A red-haired baby finds his closest friend in Floss, the sister who has long wanted a younger child to love. Fabian, known to everyone as Carrots, is the youngest of six children in a family with limited money. Mrs. Molesworth begins with his arrival and the small nursery scenes that establish their bond, including Floss holding him patiently while he sleeps.

This children's novel pays close attention to the ways siblings treat one another. Its narrator speaks directly to young readers, while conversations preserve the sounds of childhood speech. In a later passage, Cecil reads a fairy story about Elizabetha, whose careless words are changed into kinder ones. Carrots asks her to continue for Floss even when he struggles to understand. The combination of sibling affection, shared storytelling and lessons in consideration offers a picture of how children learn to care for one another.
