About this book
A Chronicle History of the Life and Work of William Shakespeare is by Frederick Gard Fleay. The text says that Lord Strange's players enjoyed almost a monopoly of Court performances until the death of that nobleman in 1594. Alleyn arranged with Henslow, his father-in-law, to give his company a local habitation in a permanent theatre.
A discussion of names says Philostrate comes from Chaucer's Knight's Tale and Oberon from Greene's James IV. The name Oberon, with Titania's, also occurs in the Queen's Entertainment at Lord Hertford's, 1591. The book includes dated entries naming, among others, The Traytor, by James Shirley, and The Platonic Lovers, by William Davenant.
