About this book

William Shakespeare: His Homes and Haunts is by S. L. Bensusan, with twelve drawings in crayon and four portraits. The contents list names chapters including Stratford-on-Avon, The Poet's Youth, The Elizabethan Taverns and Back Again in Stratford, among others. The text compares literature with a forest wherein are so many trees, so many saplings, and so much dense undergrowth, and says there is an oak that first saw life in the year 1564. The work calls itself a brief attempt to set the well-known answer down again in a form that may offer a certain convenience in point of size and selection to lovers of a great poet.

The text says that when we read Shakespeare's plays for the first time, it is at once apparent that the poet was a countryman. The text says that the spacious taverns, those who served, and those who patronised them have gone, never to return. England's greatest dramatist died on the 23rd of April 1616, in the prime of life, just fifty-two years of age.
