About this book
Noah Webster's collection is presented on its title page as essays and fugitiv writings on moral, historical, political and literary subjects. In a discussion of education in the pages sampled, he says children may be taught reading as soon as their organs of speech have strength enough, that mathematics should perhaps be the last study of youth in schools, and that one master teaching many branches in a single school is a defective plan in populous towns.
Another passage weighs variety against sameness, saying that variety pleases in the works of nature but in works of art should not interfere with utility, and it mentions the streets of Philadelphia. A quoted passage in older English contrasts well-ordered horses with wild and unfortunate children, and Webster adds that in many parts of America a gentleman's groom stands on a level with his schoolmaster in reputation.
