Village Improvements and Farm Villages

Village Improvements and Farm Villages is by George E. Waring, a consulting engineer for sanitary and agricultural works, and gathers papers reprinted, with some amendments. The contents list gives Village Improvements, Village Sanitary Work and Farm Villages.

The preface says a paper on Eastern Farming was added, continuing the discussion of village residence as a means for mitigating some of the hardships which beset the lives of isolated country families. A passage says that what it is especially desirable for a village to appear to be is a wholesome, cleanly, tidy, simple, modest collection of country homes. The text says that a piece of ground fifty feet square, having ten rows of tile five feet apart and fifty feet long, will suffice for even a large household with an abundant water supply, as a complete and permanent substitute for the expensive and nasty cesspool. The text also says the farming class in this country is degenerating by the withdrawal of its best blood.
