About this book
A Collection of Latin Maxims & Rules, in Law and Equity presents selected maxims with an English translation and an appendix referring to their authorities. The title page identifies civil, canon, feudal, English and Scots law as the fields from which the selections are drawn. The preface calls maxims general principles and says that general principles afford the most beneficial subjects of reflection.
One translated maxim says that, in ambiguous speeches, the opinion of the person who uttered them is chiefly to be considered. A maxim on discretion defines discretion as discerning what is just by the law. A rule about delay distinguishes suspension for justice's sake, described as very acceptable, from delay contrary to justice, described as very odious.
