About this book
William Dana Orcutt wrote The Writer's Desk Book. The text says the unnecessary division of a word should always be avoided, and that the whole word should be carried over whenever possible. The text says a single consonant between two vowels should be joined with the first vowel if short, but with the latter if long.
The text says the first italic types were designed and used by Aldus Manutius, the celebrated Italian printer, of the fifteenth century. A table of measures sets 20 grains equal to 1 scruple, 3 scruples equal to 1 drachm and 8 drachms equal to 1 Apothecaries’ ounce. A word list gives, among others, harmonize, italicize and organize.
