About this book

The problem of finding lasting knowledge in changing impressions gives Greek philosophy a practical point of entry. W. T. Stace presents the subject as a continuing argument about reality and thought. Published in 1920, his critical history introduces philosophical terms for readers beginning the subject while examining how successive thinkers build upon earlier ideas. Plato and Aristotle figure in his account of the connections between systems and the value of studying them together.

The discussion of Plato makes abstract distinctions concrete through a mountain whose appearance varies with light and viewpoint. Stace separates those shifting impressions from the idea that they belong to a single object, then considers the part reason plays in knowledge. He also traces the influences of Heracleitus, the Eleatics and Socrates on Plato. Readers interested in the foundations of philosophical thinking can use the book to compare arguments and understand how a theory develops from several intellectual sources.
