About this book
John Burnet, Professor of Greek, writes here about the earliest Greek thinkers and their account of the world. One passage takes up Parmenides, whose reasoning about what is leads to a finite, spherical, motionless plenum with no empty space beyond it. Burnet cites Aristotle's de Caelo on this view, and says the substance the early cosmologists sought reappears in the elements of Empedokles, the atoms of Leukippos and Demokritos, and the homoeomeries of Anaxagoras.
Another passage concerns the sea, half of which is earth and half fiery storm-cloud, with matter moving on an upward and downward path. Fragments are quoted in English with numbered references, and the footnotes are collected at the end of each chapter. A transcriber's note at the start explains how those notes were renumbered and linked.
