About this book
This 1891 edition of Philip Sidney's A Defence of Poesie and Poems begins with an introduction on his life. It says he was born at Penshurst, in Kent, on 29 November 1554, the eldest of three sons and four daughters, and that Edmund Spenser and Walter Raleigh were close to him in age.
The introduction calls the Defence of Poesy the first important piece of literary criticism in English, and links it to Stephen Gosson, whose 1579 attack on poets and players is titled The School of Abuse. In the essay itself, Sidney discusses Plato and says Plato found fault with the abuse of poetry, not with poetry. Footnotes cite Horace's Ars Poetica and explain the old rhetorical term commonplace.
