About this book

New Poems, and Variant Readings is a book of poems by Robert Louis Stevenson. The preface says the poems were discovered and given light in a privately printed edition, and would otherwise have remained scattered and hidden indefinitely in the hands of various collectors. The contents include titles such as AD MAGISTRUM LUDI, AD NEPOTEM and IN CHARIDEMUM.

A poem headed Prayer speaks of asking good things that the speaker detests, and asks the Lord to heed not the breast but to hear the prayer. A poem beginning Lo! in thine honest eyes I read says the speaker reads in honest eyes the auspicious beacon that shall lead, after long sailing in deep seas, to quiet havens. A poem addressed to a Martial speaks of the two of them enjoying their days set wholly free, bending their mind to the true life together, and taking a furlough from the falser kind.
