About this book

A lover wants to show love in verse, hoping pleasure might encourage the beloved to read and that reading might lead to knowledge, pity, and grace. A speaker describes searching for suitable words, studying inventions to entertain the beloved’s wit, and turning other writers’ leaves in hope of fresh inspiration. A poem contrasts different ways lovers address their muses with a speaker who feels his whole condition expressed by the declaration that he loves Stella.

A poem about Stella describes beauty drawing the speaker’s heart toward love and virtue bending that love toward good, while desire continues to demand nourishment. Another verse portrays two people exchanging looks while their tongues remain restrained until their hearts have finished talking, with love directing their eyes.
