About this book
The subtitle describes this as the inner history of the critical year when Japan's ports were opened and the monarchy restored, recorded by a diplomat who took an active part in the events. Ernest Mason Satow, formerly Secretary to the British Legation at Tokio, tells it in the first person.
The Legation staff is described in these pages: interpreters, a First Assistant, and two doctors, one of them his life-long friend William Willis. On a journey the party gets into palanquins to escape crowds of sightseers, and a room is made over into a bazaar of cabinet work and lacquered ware. In another passage the Prime Minister reads out the Mikado's speech at an audience, Sir Harry replies, and the party canters back to the old Legation building in Takanawa.
