About this book

A broken leg brings Nicolas Notovitch back to the Buddhist convent of Himis, where his interest in religious manuscripts becomes part of his account of recovery. In the preface, he claims that a lama read writings about Jesus Christ to him and that an interpreter helped him record them. His travel narrative through India and Ladak supplies the setting for the account of Saint Issa and the commentary that follows.

Conversations with the chief lama connect questions about Issa's standing in Buddhist tradition with the daily details of hospitality. Monks prepare a bed for the injured visitor, while a watch and an alarm clock become subjects of explanation during his stay. These scenes give the book a personal, observational form alongside its religious claims. Readers interested in religious legend and nineteenth-century travel writing can examine how Notovitch presents his evidence through reported conversations, manuscript translation and his own arguments.
