About this book

A Double Story by George MacDonald begins with a certain country where things used to go rather oddly. The opening says it was impossible to say whether the next baby would be a boy, or a girl, or even, after he was a week old, whether he would wake sweet-tempered or cross. The text says that when a girl cried for the moon, they got her a thin disc of brilliantly polished silver, as near the size of the moon as they could agree upon.

The text says that when the girl was five years old, they gave her a splendid gold repeater, so close set with diamonds and rubies that the back was just one crust of gems. In one scene, a wise woman sets a princess down and, walking on, vanishes among the trees within a few paces, and the cries of the princess rent the air, but the fir-trees never heeded her.
