About this book
A Hidden Life and Other Poems is by George MacDonald. A poem headed To My Father begins, "Take of the first fruits, Father, of thy care, Wrapped in the fresh leaves of my gratitude," and goes on to say, "Thou hast been faithful to my highest need." A passage tells of a youth: love of knowledge grew within him to a passion and a power, and mathematics wiled him to their heights and made Euclid like a great romance of truth.
A passage says that as they crossed a field they came by chance upon a place where once a home had been, with fragments of ruined walls half-overgrown with moss. A verse in the text says that the mother shares the awful strife and stands beside the cross, and a line addresses her: "Mother, the hour of tears is past; The sword hath reached thy soul."
