About this book
A Fable for Critics, by James Russell Lowell, carries on its title page the words "A glance at a few of our literary progenies." The book addresses the reader with the lines "Reader! walk up at once (it will soon be too late) and buy at a perfectly ruinous rate". The text says all the characters sketched in this slight jeu d'esprit are meant to be faithful, though it may be they seem, here and there, rather free and drawn from a somewhat too cynical standpoint.
A preliminary note to the second edition says its writer would not take back the least thing he then said, though he thereby could butter both sides of his bread. One speaker grants, if you choose, that a man being discussed has unqualified merits, but lacks the one merit of kindling enthusiasm. A speaker says certain things were ladders the Artist erected to climb over the narrow horizon of space and of time.
