Among My Books. First Series is credited to James Russell Lowell. The contents list names Dryden, Witchcraft, Shakespeare Once More and Lessing, among others. The piece headed Dryden opens by saying that Benvenuto Cellini tells us that when, in his boyhood, he saw a salamander come out of the fire, his grandfather forthwith gave him a sound beating.
The writer says that a prosaic element in Dryden will force itself upon him and that, reading him, he cannot help thinking of an ostrich. The writer gives Shakespeare's words Unhouseled, disappointed, unaneled and says that Milton came after him, or more likely after the Greek, with Unrespited, unpitied, unreprieved. The writer speaks of Mr. Thomas Moore, returning pleasantly in a travelling-carriage from a trip to Italy.
