About this book

Pennsylvania's public art, old buildings and local history come together in this guide edited by Margaretta Archambault. Published in 1924, it preserves material compiled in 1917, with town populations updated to the 1920 figures. The counties appear in the order in which they were formed, and towns are grouped by location. An opening section records Philadelphia's historic firsts, while the contents and illustration lists range from churches and colleges to bridges, monuments and galleries.

The entries often connect a place to the work once done there. In the account of Hopewell furnace, water power, woodland, decorated stoves and workers' homes become parts of the same industrial history. Bedford County brings a different emphasis: mountain ranges, cultivated valleys, mineral springs and an early wagon road. Maps and a bibliography support the brief descriptions. Readers interested in regional history or architecture can use the book to see which places and achievements an early twentieth-century guide considered worth recording.
