About this book
Hertfordshire is by Herbert W. Tompkins, whose preface says he has endeavoured to give a brief description of Hertfordshire on the lines of the book by Mr. F. G. Brabant. A line credited to Charles Lamb reads hearty, homely, loving Hertfordshire. A numbered list of rivers names the Lea as the largest river in Hertfordshire, which rises near Leagrave in Bedfordshire and flows through the county from N.W. to S.E.
The text says Hitchin was noted during the sixteenth century for its trade in wood and malt. The text mentions the making of lavender water in the town, referred to in the Introduction. A list of names with page references includes Cromwell, Oliver and Conan, Duke of Brittany.
