About this book
The preface presents the explanation of common phenomena of life as the branch of science of most general interest. The preface asks why familiar things have particular colours, naming white salt and snow, a red rose, green leaves, and a deep purple violet. The guide’s questions cover the dangers of leaning against a wall or ringing a bell during a thunder-storm.
The answers attribute the commotion of boiling water mainly to ascending and descending currents of hot and cold water, with escaping air increasing the agitation. The explanation places the hot ascending current close to the kettle’s metal sides and the cold descending current down the centre. The guide describes boiling bubbles as portions of steam formed at the vessel’s bottom, rising to the surface and escaping into the air.
