About this book
The preface presents the principles of modern English Grammar in a simple and practical manner, with an intended combination of sentence study and speech exercises. The preface observes that understanding the rules of syntax does not by itself ensure avoidance of errors or the use of correct forms.
The lesson on the imperative mode describes a form used to express a command or an entreaty, with its subject always a pronoun. The accompanying exercise asks for the selection of imperative verbs from sentences and their conjugation in the indicative, subjunctive, and imperative modes. The imperative summary gives only one form for the mode and identifies its possible subjects as you, thou, or ye.
