About this book

A Handbook of Illustration is by A. Horsley Hinton, with reproductions from photograms and sketches by the author and other artists. The contents list names chapters on, among others, an introduction with primitive illustrations, a neglected field, the theory and principles of illustration, and reproduction by half-tone process. The text says that from confusing art with illustration we find a man saying he cannot do this or that because he is no artist, and that the present book has been undertaken with a hope of placing in the hands of such, at least to some extent, a means of graphic expression.

The text says Mr. Blackburn gives a capital example in his Art of Illustration of a newspaper correspondent in a boat on one of the Italian lakes, who wishes to describe the scene on a calm summer day. The text names two chief differences of style, a great number of strokes rapidly put in and a few bold lines slowly and deliberately drawn, and says that in the latter the principal study is perhaps to know what to leave out.
