About this book

Folding sheets, sewing sections and fitting covers turn a stack of printed pages into a finished volume. Joseph William Zaehnsdorf explains these operations in a practical handbook whose revised second edition appeared in 1890. Its chapters follow the binder's work through preparation and construction to decorative finishing, with plates and diagrams accompanying the text. The contents also cover coloured edges, gold leaf, different covering materials and the cleaning of paper.

Small decisions receive close attention. In the passage on half bindings, Zaehnsdorf discusses how leather, cloth and paper meet, while his advice on pasting down end papers stresses smooth surfaces and straight joints. He also considers the appearance of a library, proposing colours that distinguish books by subject. Readers interested in handcraft or the physical history of books can see how durability, economy and personal taste shape the same object.
