About this book
The introduction to A Handbook of Modern Japan states an intention to portray Japan as it is rather than as it was, without ignoring the past. The chapter outline on people, houses, food and dress lists social classes, family and empire, public buildings, rooms, gardens, meals, table manners and foreign cooking.
The discussion of origins calls the identity of Japan's aborigines a disputed question and says the identity of the people who inhabited caves and pits is not positively known. The account of Christian literature describes numerous biblical commentaries and theological treatises, and daily newspapers owned and edited by Christians who use their columns to teach Christian ideals.
