About this book
Corea, subtitled The Hermit Nation, divides its subject between ancient and medieval history, political and social matters, and modern and recent history. The account of Jingu's expedition says that the empress prohibited looting and allowed only the treasures constituting tribute to be taken. The text distinguishes Japanese acceptance of Jingu's conquest as sound history from critics' rejection of many elements in the tradition.
The discussion of dragons describes creatures capable of transformation and of making themselves visible or invisible at will. The account of Corean art associates depictions of the dragon with water, clouds, or the sacred jewel the creature guards.
