About this book
Religion in Japan by George A. Cobbold brings Shintoism, Buddhism and Christianity together as its subjects. The contents list separate sections on Shintoism and Buddhism, including Buddhism in Japan, Buddhism and Christianity, and Christianity in Japan. An account of political change says that the Mikado was restored to imperial power and immediately entered upon a policy generally received with favour by the people.
The description identifies the Great Bell as an instrument used for invocation and worship rather than for summoning the faithful. The account describes a Drum-tower, a shed covered with pictures, charms and other offerings, and cisterns for ceremonial purification.
