About this book
Renaissance Literary Theory and Practice is by Charles Sears Baldwin. The title page gives the subject as classicism in the rhetoric and poetic of Italy, France, and England 1400-1600. A chapter headed “Drama” says that revival of drama is not a Renaissance achievement and that the Renaissance has no drama distinctively its own.
The text says that Garnier’s classicism is thoroughly of his time, vouched by forty editions in less than thirty years. The text calls Les Juifves a noble poem whose literary type is still clear in the nobler Samson Agonistes of Milton. A discussion says the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were regarded not only at the time, but long and widely, as an actual new day, the Renaissance, which still claims attention as a widespread cult of the ancient classics and whose leading ideas permeated western Europe.
