About this book
A History of Story-telling, subtitled Studies in the Development of Narrative, is by Arthur Ransome. The text says that in the beginning man was a very little thing in the face of a stupendous Universe, and that story-telling raised him higher and higher until at last heaven and earth were hidden by the gigantic figure of a man. The text says that in the Arthur legend, in the legend of Charlemagne, in the Sagas, we can watch men becoming heroes, and heroes supernatural.
The text calls Roderick Random a rogue and a skunk, but says we cannot blame Tobias Smollett if he did not know it. A section on the technique of the English novel says that the technique of the English novel was more elaborate than that of its models. The text says De Maupassant, the pupil of Flaubert, makes even clearer than his master the intimate connection between those apparently hostile things, Romanticism and Realism.
