About this book

The Legend of Sir Lancelot du Lac by Jessie L. Weston examines the knight's place among heroes and his appearances in poems. The study finds the earliest mention of the knight that can presently be traced in the Erec of Chrétien de Troyes, where Lanceloz del Lac ranks third among the listed heroes. The discussion of Cligés describes a tournament in which the hero appears on four successive days in different armour, overcoming Segramor, Lancelot and Perceval.

The account of Le Chevalier de la Charrette notes Lancelot's appearance as Gawain's superior and Guinevere's lover, without an explanation of his changed position. The examination of Morien identifies an episode involving Lancelot's conflict with a monster.
