About this book
A History of the Town of Fairfax is a book by Jeanne Johnson Rust. A dedication is addressed to the writer’s husband and his favorite town. The text says the Manahoac Indian remarked to Captain John Smith that he knew not what lay beyond the Blue Ridge except the sun, because the woods were not burnt.
The text says the colonists cleared their land by burning also, and when they had exploited one area moved on to another. A parenthesis says that they did not burn as large areas as the Indians. The text says records show that the membership of the Fairfax Circuit fluctuated between a high of 604 in 1819 to a low of 332 in 1839.
