About this book
The History of the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia was prepared and printed by authority of the Common Council, under the direction of its committee on publication. The account says the reason Pocahontas left her home for the protection of Japazaws is not positively known. Howe thinks Powhatan was preparing for a great war with the new settlers and wanted to remove his daughter from danger, exposure, and discomfort.
The military account records troops being ordered back to Richmond and mustered out after peace was declared, before the troops had been ordered into action. The Guards numbered one hundred and twelve men on the rolls. The company was reorganized soon after discharge from the United States army, reentered State service, and is described as numbering sixty-two men under Captain Thomas M. Larkin.
