About this book
George Washington's choice of a fort site at the meeting of two rivers opens Samuel Harden Church's account of Pittsburgh. Published in 1908 for the city's founding anniversary, the history is arranged in historical, industrial, and intellectual sections. The opening follows competing French and British claims to the region, dealings with local tribes, and the difficulties of travel through the surrounding country. River depth, terrain, and routes of transport help explain why the location mattered.
A later section examines the Homestead labor dispute of 1892 through contract terms and the relationship between steel prices and wages. Church explains disagreements over minimum pay, improved machinery, and the season when agreements should expire, while his criticism of the workers' leadership reveals his sympathies. The illustration list points to another side of the city: parks, an observatory, technical schools, and the Carnegie Institute. Readers interested in urban history can consider the city's public ambitions alongside the author's firm views on industrial conflict.
