About this book
English witch trials become a study of evidence, public fear and changing opinion in Wallace Notestein's historical account, published in 1911. His narrative covers the years from Elizabeth's accession in 1558 to Francis Hutchinson's challenge to witchcraft belief in 1718. In the preface, Notestein explains why he began with a chronological survey: accounts of particular trials had accumulated errors as later writers repeated earlier reports.
Pamphlets, court records, diaries, newspapers and theological writings supply the material for this investigation. The middle excerpt considers official responses to accusations during the Protectorate, including a Rutlandshire case and proposals for easing the criminal law. Notestein weighs these scattered records cautiously before suggesting that the government favored leniency. Readers interested in early modern England can follow both the history of the accusations and the historian's effort to distinguish documented events from uncertain interpretations.
