About this book
The subtitle of Feudal England is Historical Studies on the Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries, and the title page gives it as first published in 1895. In his preface J. H. Round explains that readers asked him to reprint his researches in collected form, and that he added much new material, especially on Domesday. He says he went mainly to records, in manuscript or in print, to add to or correct existing knowledge of facts.
The text includes Latin extracts and tables. One passage compares the entries for an estate in different surveys and tabulates the errors of Domesday. Another reasons about a holding of three hides and a half belonging to Gilbert fitz Thorold, and what it suggests about which of two surveys is the earlier. Footnotes cite the Abingdon Cartulary and the Magna Vita.
