About this book

Rabbi Lee J. Levinger, formerly a First Lieutenant Chaplain in the United States Army, wrote A Jewish Chaplain in France. A caption lists a group of Jewish welfare workers at Le Mans, France, in March 1919, including Chaplain Lee J. Levinger. The text says the chaplain had much welfare work of a more general kind, and gives requests such as one man wanting advice about getting married before leaving for the front, among others.

The text says the need for religion was evident in the training camp, the hospital, the transport, the trenches. At Dijon, Rabbi Schumacher of the local French synagogue led a great congregation of 2,000 men through the rain to the synagogue for worship and afterward to the Seder tables. The text calls the great Seder at Paris the most striking of all, with a crowd of American, Australian, English, French and Italian soldiers. The text says the soldier enjoyed ceremonies that reminded him of home and childhood, but regarded them largely as pleasant memories.
