About this book

The Red Vineyard is by Rev. B. J. Murdoch, who is described as late chaplain to Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Under the heading Mass Out of Doors in Chapter VI, Murdoch says that on Sundays he would set up the portable altar on two rifle boxes placed one above the other. Murdoch says that often three thousand were drawn up on the green plain as level as a floor.

Murdoch says he heard confessions from seven p. m. till midnight, and as the clock struck the midnight hour one of his lads from the Fourteenth began to sing a Christmas hymn. Murdoch writes that the German parish priest came in to the sacristy and told him he would give communion to the men. Murdoch writes that Father Sheehan went on to prove that Murdoch was in luck, and that the Sisters had left bottles and bottles of preserved pears, peaches, and strawberries, among others. Under the heading Telegraph Hill, Murdoch writes that the following Sunday he said Mass on Telegraph Hill, a very high elevation.
