About this book
A King's Comrade, subtitled A Story of Old Hereford, is credited to Charles W. Whistler. The contents list names chapters called How the First Danes Came to England, How Wilfrid Kept a Promise, and Swam in Portland, and How Quendritha the Queen Wove Her Plots, among others. A narrator asks what a companion thinks of ships heading for the river mouth and haven, and the reply is that they are no Frisian traders and seem full of armed men.
A question in the text asks whether one has heard of the northern strangers who have harried the Welsh beyond the Severn sea. A character named Erling tells the narrator to hold his peace and leave a matter to the group, while Sighard is plainly in a towering rage. A narrator tells of men who leap from the ditch on either hand to fall on his party, which was eight, with only four able to stand in the gateway at a time.
