About this book
Arthur Conan Doyle is the author of The Great Shadow and Other Napoleonic Tales. The contents list begins with The Great Shadow, whose chapters include The Night of the Beacons and The Choosing of Jim, and it also names The Crime of the Brigadier. A narrator named Jock Calder of West Inch says it is strange to him to feel that though now, in the very centre of the nineteenth century, he is but five-and-fifty years of age. A narrator says that at school he never heard the end of this, for they would call him Half-and-half, The Great Britain and sometimes Union Jack.
A letter is signed Bonaventure de Lissac, with the words "Colonel des Voltigeurs de la Garde" written under his name. A British 32-gun frigate called Leda, Captain A. P. Johnson, raises her black, glistening side upon the crest of a wave at a safe distance from a shore with craggy points and a few scattered clumps of palm trees.
