About this book
An older woman recalls her youth for a group of listeners gathered during autumn evenings. Her story begins with schooldays in England, where letters and gifts arrive from her parents in India, and her father's military rank feeds her sense of importance. After family loss, she becomes the ward of Mrs. Hollingford, a friend of her mother whose own household has suffered financial ruin. Hillsbro' Farm promises a very different life from the one the girl had imagined.
This novel follows feelings through remembered conversations, small acts of kindness and awkward social encounters. The narrator looks back critically on her youthful pride while preserving her affection for a kindly teacher. Later, her attachment to John meets the painful discovery of Rachel's longstanding love for him. The contrast between a lively drawing room and her private distress gives the romance its emotional pressure. It offers a study of how manners and appearances shape what people understand about one another.
