About this book
This is a literary history of the Arabs. One passage explains why the author uses the terms South Arabic and Sabaean, not Himyarite, for the ancient inscriptions and language of Yemen, and names Carsten Niebuhr, whose Beschreibung von Arabien of 1772 told Europe about inscriptions at the ruins of Zafar. An illustration shows a miniature from an Arabic manuscript in the British Museum, dated 1256, which holds the Maqamat of Hariri with 81 coloured miniatures.
Verse appears in English translation. One passage gives lines by Qatari b. al-Fuja'a, a Kharijite leader, taken from the Hamasa and cited by Ibn Khallikan. Another describes how the Moslem community divided into two parties after the death of 'Uthman. A reference list names works by Dozy, Arnold, Nöldeke and Lane-Poole.
