About this book
A History of Sinai by Lina Eckenstein discusses the sanctuary at Serabit and the circumstances in which visitors recorded the site. The account says the sanctuary was unknown to Europeans until Carsten Niebuhr chanced upon it in 1762, without recording its name. Seetzen, who visited between 1809 and 1810, recorded the name as Serrabit-el-Chadem.
The discussion describes Sopd as absent from the older Egyptian pantheon and, to all appearance, an Egyptianised divinity of Semitic origin. The account says Justinian built a military station at the mountain's foot so that the Saracens might not attack Palestine unawares. The text calls a decree declaring the foundation's independence a forgery, while noting that the convent's independent standing was generally accepted.
