About this book
Coarse woollen clothing provides the starting point for Reynold Alleyne Nicholson's explanation of the name Sufi. From that concrete detail, his 1914 study considers the history of Islamic mysticism and the changing place of religious discipline, spiritual knowledge and divine love. Chapters cover illumination, saints, miracles and the experience of union with God, with Arabic and Persian writings presented in English translations.
Nicholson sets mystical teaching beside questions about responsibility, faith and the nature of reality. In the discussion of Rumi, he compares lyrical expressions of unity with the arguments of the Masnavi, including its treatment of evil within a divine order. His approach combines historical explanation with passages from the writers he studies. Readers interested in the relationship between poetry and religious thought can follow how images of light and reflection become ways of reasoning about God and human life.
