About this book

Primrose is a yellow-haired country child who swings her sunbonnet in the orchard until her Quaker aunt calls her a heedless girl. Life on the farm is plain: gray homespun, scrubbed floors, speech full of "thee" and "thou". Then word comes that she must spend her winters in town with a wealthy relation, Madam Wetherill, where a tutor, a spinet and dancing lessons are waiting.

Amanda M. Douglas, who lived from 1831 to 1916, sets her novel in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. As Primrose moves between the strict household and the fashionable one, the war comes closer. The British army holds the city, and some of the townspeople quietly gather money, clothes and blankets to send to the American soldiers at Valley Forge. Chapter titles such as "A Little Rebel" and "Mid War's Alarms" mark the stages of her growing up.

It suits readers who enjoy historical fiction with a young girl at its center and careful detail of Quaker homes, old markets and a city divided in its loyalties.
