About this book

Jeanne Angelot wants to hear again how a stranger left her in Pani's arms outside Detroit's palisade. Pani, formerly enslaved and then left to make her own way, recalls the child's arrival with a mixture of tenderness and fear. A name pinned to clothing, a locket and a ring are among the details of Jeanne's beginnings. Amanda M. Douglas places this children's historical novel in a settlement shaped by French and English rule, the fur trade and the waters linking the lakes.

Later, a letter brings Jeanne news that an older friend plans to return. She remembers learning to write for him, shares her delight with Pani and takes her into the woods. These scenes connect the larger history of Detroit with close personal ties and the pleasures of its surroundings. Readers find affectionate conversation, questions about Jeanne's origins and descriptions of trees, flowers and river life.
