About this book

Rain has stalled the wagon camps at Independence, Missouri, in May 1848. Settlers bound for California and Oregon trade advice, choose traveling companions and wait for the roads to clear. Among them is David Crystal, a thoughtful young man whose friend has just died of cholera. Geraldine Bonner places his grief beside the wider hopes of emigrants looking toward the Pacific, before news of California's gold has reached the waiting companies.

The novel follows an overland route through prairie, river country, mountains and desert, with personal loyalties sharing the stage with the demands of travel. In a later camp scene, Susan keeps silent after Lucy leaves with Zavier, while a farewell written on a buffalo skull brings the family's anger into the open. Readers interested in frontier fiction will find close attention to camp life, conflicting expectations and the decisions that strain relationships along the trail.
