About this book
A Lover's Complaint is credited here to William Shakespeare. A speaker lies down to listen to a sad-tun’d tale and sees a fickle maid full pale, tearing papers and breaking rings a-twain. The maid wears upon her head a platted hive of straw which fortified her visage from the sun. The maid draws out a thousand favours of amber, crystal and beaded jet, and throws them one by one into a river.
The maid has many folded schedules, which she reads, sighs over, tears and gives to the flood. A speaker recalls a man whose foul beguiling had patterns the speaker knew, and whose deceits were gilded in his smiling. A speaker says a man preached pure maid and praised cold chastity.
