About this book

A Maid at King Alfred's Court is a story for girls by Lucy Foster Madison, illustrated by Ida Waugh. A verse speaks of bringing King Alfred and his glorious reign, and calls Britain’s king pure and gentle. The contents list chapters titled, among others, The Meeting in the Forest, A Thief in the Night and The Wolves’ Concert.

A character called Athelnoth says that naught can prevent the people from rising when they know of the king's whereabouts. Egwina tells Adiva to say naught against the king, and says Edward may be chosen of the witan to be cyning some day. Someone says that a Saxon maiden who can keep a whole pack of wolves enthralled by her music must be treated gently. The party of Saxons who had come to the rescue of Egwina proved to be swineherds, returning from their day’s work in the forest.
