About this book
The introduction calls A Little Maid of Old Maine a true story of the brave effort of two girls to bring help to a little settlement on the Maine coast at the time of the War of the Revolution. The introduction also says Parson Lyon, the father of Melvina, was a friend and correspondent of Washington, and that the capture of the English gunboat by the Machias men is often referred to in history as The Lexington of the Seas. Anna nods her head and says Yes, Mother, there is to be a liberty pole set up so it can be well seen from the harbor.
Anna asks "As brave as Washington?" and the text says her father smiled down at her and she smiled back happily. Danna owns to herself that she had never been so tired. The strap across her shoulders, supporting the heavy load, pressed heavily and at times became almost unbearable; but not for a moment did it occur to Danna to relinquish the burden.
